I read to escape and discover different kinds of people and new places and adventures, but I really love to read stories and characters that feel real to me and who I can relate with. I think because it helps me to understand myself better and make sense of my thoughts, feelings, opinions, and because I learn things about myself that I might not have realised before. While it’s good to read and learn about different people to challenge myself and my thinking about different perspectives or cultures, I’ve found most of my favourite books and the characters in them are those who I relate with and can see something in them that reminds me of myself. So these are few characters that I relate to the most (and have continued to even as I’ve re-read their books sometimes years later).
Hermione Granger // Harry Potter series
Hermione was my bookish bff from my childhood (and still is, if I’m honest). She showed me that being the smart girl isn’t a bad thing, and that it’s okay if the library is your favourite place to be (which is completely true even as an adult). But I also love that Hermione shows me throughout the series what’s really important – being brave and standing up for what you believe in.
