I have always loved to collect quotes, particularly book quotes. I have kept a quote notebook for as long as I can remember – although nowadays it’s mostly electronically kept on my devices (which makes it super handy to take note of a quote wherever I may be). I often speak in quotes from books and movies, and sometimes even lyrics – especially with my sister and it drives those around us crazy! So of course, a feature where I share quotes that I’ve been obsessing about or inspired by was an obvious inclusion on the blog.
So today, I’m dedicating the first post in the feature to the first book of my most favourite series – Harry Potter. With all the excitement around the 20th anniversary for Harry Potter over the last few months, I was inspired to re-read the first book (actually the entire series) and with it I’ve been reminded of the beautiful quotes throughout the book and series. So without further ado, here are some of my favourites from The Philosopher’s Stone…
“This boy will be famous, a legend. I wouldn’t be surprised if today was known as Harry Potter day in future. There will be books written about Harry. Every child in the world will know his name.” – Professor McGonagall
Spoken by Professor McGonagall in the first chapter, I’ve always thought how wonderfully foreshadowing this quote is, given JK Rowling had no idea how phenomenal the series and Harry Potter would become.
“There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.”
This quote is a subtle passage of narration, but I’ve always liked the simplicity of it as it describes the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
“Books! And cleverness! There are more important things – friendship and bravery.” – Hermione Granger
So Hermione has her priorities sorted out after all! hehe I love her reminder to Harry that in the life-and-death situations they find themselves in, friendship is what matters above all. I also like that these quotes highlight the qualities of Gryffindor.
“It does not do to dwell on dreams, and forget to live, remember that.” – Dumbledore
This is my favourite quote from book one, and one of many from Dumbledore! Such a beautiful quote.
Tell me in the comments: What is your favourite quote from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?
