Happy New Year! I’m so excited the New Year (and the organiser in me is somewhat chuffed that it is starting on a Monday! haha) because I love new starts – new months, years, weeks, days. I love that no matter what has happened in the day/week/month/year before, you get to put it behind you and start again.
On the weekend, I showed you how I’ll be planning and journalling for the year. And today I’m kicking the year off by sharing my new years goals.
In one way or another, I have always been a goal setter. I’m a dreamer at heart and I love thinking about what the possibilities of the future and everything it might bring, and how I can make those things happen. But I’m also a realist, and so I’m one who constantly reevaluates my goals and as they year goes by they often change depending on where I’m at with them or what else is happening in my life. For me, this is actually a good thing, because we don’t ever stay exactly the same. We grow and change, so sometimes our goals change or grow with us. So it’s quite possible that these will change (or be added to or maybe scrapped all together) as the year goes on, and that’s okay.
But I have a feeling 2018 will be a good one and I’m excited for all that I want to do and achieve in the season of life that I’m currently in. This year I will be doing monthly goals with my LBD planner but these will be based on my yearly goals. So for consistency, I’ve written my goals in the same format as the monthly and divided my goals in the categories: self-care, family/relationships, health, finance, fun and home. I’m going to be doing a separate post for my reading and blogging resolutions through the week so look out for that!
So without further ado, here are my 2018 goals…
// Get monthly pedicures. I love having my nails painted but because of my job, I can’t have my fingernails done (insert crying face). But I can have my toes done! And because I’m on my feet so much, they could do with some love and attention. So this year, I want to get a monthly pedicure.
// Establish morning and night time routines. As a shift worker, my weekly schedule is never the same as I work a rotating roster over 7 days. This year I’ve sort of lived day by day, just getting through without any real routine. So this year I really want to work on setting a morning and night routine. I want my routines to be flexible for whatever shift I am doing, but there’s a few things I want to make sure I’m doing each day: 1) Read daily either in the morning or before bed (or sometimes both!), 2) Stick to a skin care routine and 3) Plan and journal. So this year (this month actually), I’m going to focus on making these part of my day.
// Feel healthier and stronger. So many people have new years goals to ‘lose x amount of weight’, ‘workout 5 times a week’ or ‘go on x diet’. For me, I want to keep it simple and just want to feel healthier and stronger in my self and my body. I’m not putting too much pressure on myself to do ‘x’ amount of exercise or eat ‘x’ foods. What I do want to do is move more and eat less. I want to spend more time in nature.. I love the beach so I want to do more walks at the beach and I want to get back into my spin bike routine. I also want to get into pilates again! Food wise, I want to be more mindful of the types of food I eat – more fresh food and less processed stuff.
// Document life and memories. I’m not so good at documenting life and the memories I make and I really want to be! Project Life has been on my radar for quite a while, but for different reasons (money, time, energy, etc, etc) I haven’t got into it. But this year is going to be the year that I do it!I’m planning to do journalling monthly rather than weekly as I think this will be easier for me to manage. I’ve already ordered an album, cards and the protector sheets and they should arrive next week sometime so I’m already off to a good start. I also want to capture memories on video and do the 1 Second Everyday video challenge. Basically 1SE it’s an app that helps you make a video compiled of 1 second videos from your day, but if you’ve never heard of this, I definitely recommend googling it!
Finance is where I have my biggest goals this year and I’ll be making them my top priority! In the interest of internet safety, I’m not going to share specifics here (sorry!) but I will talk a little about what I’m planning to do:
// Seriously save for a house deposit. 2017 was a great year for me financially, and I’m really happy with what I achieved savings wise. BUT as it was my first proper year of having an income, I probably spent a little more than I should. I didn’t go crazy by any means, but I did make a few big purchases and also spent money a little too haphazardly. This year I’m determined to buy my home so I really need to reign in the spending and crank my saving up a few gears. I’ve got a draft of my 2018 budget and savings projections, but it’s need a more working so that’s exactly what I’ll be doing before my first payday! And I’ll be reading The Barefoot Investor’s book to kick start my finance year and give me some motivation and inspiration.
// 52 week challenge (reverse biggest to smallest). This is the other big savings plan that I’ll be doing this year (other than restoring/building my sinking funds). If you haven’t seen this challenge going around, basically you it’s a savings guide where you put away a little bit each week ($1-52) and you build up to the amount your saving based on the week in the year (ie. week 1 = $1, week 2 = $2). At the end of the year you should have $1378 in total. However, as December can be a big month money wise, I’ll be doing in reverse (biggest amount to smallest) so I’m starting off by saving $52 in week 1 and each week decreasing the amount I put away and I’m going to use this money saved as my Christmas/End of Year/Birthday fund.
Like in my finance goals, BUYING my own home will be my biggest, most important goal, but I have a few smaller goals that I want to do too:
// Birthday desk/office makeover. This goal will be achieved this week, because it’s my birthday on Thursday (I’ll be 26 yayyyy!) but it’s been a goal/to-do of mine for a while. My current desk in a little worst for wear, and the space is so uninspiring to be no matter what I do. So in the last few months of 2017, I’ll budgeted and planned for a desk makeover that I’ve decided will be for my birthday (my present to myself) and on Thursday I’m going to go to Ikea and get the desk and a few other things to make the space fun and inspiring. I’m SO excited!
// Declutter and minimalise everything for moving out. Minimalism has been on my radar for the last year or so, but I haven’t ever fully committed to it. Well this year will be the year! I’m really don’t want to move into a new house and bring clutter with me, so I will be going through every single thing that I own and really deciding if I need/want it and if I have space for it. Although, while I’m in this transitional period and space is limited, I may put some things into storage to until I move out, but it won’t be coming into the new house if I don’t have space for it (or I really need or love it).
// Keep a herb garden. This is really simple, but I want to connect with nature more this year and I think this is a good way to do it! My herbs will be in planter boxes (so they are transportable!) but I want to learn about how to grow them (which ones can grow together) and hopefully create something nice but also useful.
// Bake something new once a month. My birthday/gift to myself for getting though my grad year (almost) will be a KitchenAid stand mixer (a long time dream of mine) and in an effort to make sure I use it, I’m setting myself this goal to actually use it!
// Prioritise experiences over things. I don’t know where I first heard this expression, but it has stuck with me. I haven’t exactly been great at this — I get distracted by pretty things! hehe — but this year I really want to do this and experience new experiences and places because at the end of the day it’s the memories from these experiences that I’ll remember not the things.
So there’s my goals for 2018! These may change through the year as I write my monthly goals and reevaluate how I will achieve them. I’m going to make a pretty little graphic/picture and putting in my planner AND my office area so they’re visible and therefore I’m more likely to achieve them!
I hope that 2018 is your best year yet and you achieve your goals/hopes/dreams and that this year brings you peace, love and laughter.
